The Maldron is on the North end of Smithfield square, which has recently been redeveloped. The square is mostly sleek new buildings but the surrounding area is older and a bit rougher than is ideal. Having said that, in recent years the Smithfield/Stoneybatter area has become quite popular with bohemian artsy types and there are some local attractions on the square itself (the Lighthouse cinema, the Jameson Distillery, the old observation tower). There is also a tram stop at the far end of the square which will get you into town in just a few minutes. The hotel itself is fine – clean modern décor, very friendly service and a decent self-service breakfast included in the price of your room. Overall, if you are planning to be out and about during the day then this is not a bad option for the price.

The Maldron Smithfield was built only a few years ago when the local area was redeveloped. It’s a fairly standard budget hotel (part of a small group), most suitable for use as a base from which to see the city. The rooms are generously proportioned, comfortably furnished, and well maintained. The main lobby runs into the breakfast/dining area, so even if you’re the first one down for breakfast you don’t feel like you’re all on your own. The Smithfield area has become quite cool in recent years—nearby there are some nice cafes and an independent cinema. And, if you’re returning after the pubs have closed, you can make use of the vending machine in the lobby, which sells cans of Heineken for €3 (very unusual—perhaps bordering on illegal—in Ireland).

Thus far, the wait staff are very friendly/helpful and the hotel is nice but no air conditioners in rooms...this is going to be an interesting stay for a person who actually cannot take the heat. Reception did send up a fan and it's working nicely. I'll edit this review in a couple of days to see if the rating goes up.
