The city of Malibu is a 22-mile strip of land between Santa Monica and the Ventura County line. Malibu includes beaches, canyons and mountains. Home to a number of Hollywood stars, its civic center shopping area is not worth a special trip. However, other parts of Malibu are.

I love Malibu. A beach town located just west of Santa Monica, Malibu is a haven for surfers and celebrities alike, providing a serene country environment very close to the city. Those who grow up in Malibu are amazingly sheltered from city life and Malibu really is a world of its own. In Malibu you will find great food, great beaches and great shopping, but this is not the place for bargain-hunters: life in Malibu is anything but cheap.

Here’s our guide to one of the prettiest places on Earth, mudslide survival kit not included.
Where to Eat: Malibu Cafe at Calamingos Ranch, for the bottomless Mimosa brunch; Cafe Habana, for the grilled corn; Neptune’s Net, or ‘The Net’, for East-Coast-style seafood and biker gangs.
Where to Shop: Hidden Treasures Vintage Shop (154 S Topanga Canyon Blvd). You may have to dig, but you’ll definitely find gold.
Where to Sun & Surf: Ideally, on the property of a well-to-do friend out in Carbon. Realistically, we like Zuma, El Matador, or La Piedra best in terms of public beaches.
Where to Hike: Escondido Falls
Where to Find Culture: The Getty Villa, anytime.
Where to Wine: Pack a picnic and enjoy live music with a bottle or two at Malibu Wines, or post up at the Rosenthal Tasting Room for a $12 4-wine flight.
Best Bar in Town: The Sunset; just be sure to stick to the booze as the food is pricey.
Non-Cheesy Must-Do: Deep fried fish, BYOB Miller Lite (or whatever suits your cheap-booze fancy) and picture perfect seaside views at Malibu Seafood.
