This is newer Mama Lu which I think is better than the old one, better decor and more seating for big party. I had better XLB than the old one for some reason. Service isn't as good but food is better is what it matter to me more. Mama Lu in general gave you best bang for dumpling and quality. Staff here do speak decent english and definite second best dumpling house behind XLB but is affortable and less waiting.

Really like the food here. Reasonably priced, huge portions of Chinese food. The chili wontons were great, soup dumplings were decent enough to quell my cravings for soup dumplings without waiting in line at the more popular din tai fung, free and ample parking in an underground lot. They even accept credit cards!Recommended for:

3.5 stars for food rounding up to 4 stars. Only order the dumplings items here. The regular Cantonese dishes are not that good. The dumplings, beef roll, Shanghai chow mein are the highlights here.
Come before 6pm, there shouldn't be a wait. Other then that the wait is ridiculous.
They now accept credit cards with $20 min.Recommended for:

90% of the tastiness of Din Tai Fung. 60% of the price. That's a winner in my book. Seriously, their dumplings are delicious and everything is cheap cheap cheap. You can even buy a bag of 50 dumplings for $13 and steam them at home, which is an even better deal.Recommended for:

Best traditional chinese sit down restaurant ever!
Walking in, you don't expect much, asides from there is always a waiting line. However, once you sit down you will get the menu and the prices will blow you away. Everything is really cheap here and the portions are amazing. I had the best green beans ever here. The pork dumplings were amazing as well. I also the sweet and sour peking chicken and that was okay.
The service is okay. However, the portions were huge, you can easily feed 3 to 4 people on $20. It's Chinese insanity... or lu-sanity (sorry the knicks game was on XD)

This is a newer and larger location of Mama's Lu, located about half a mile from the original restaurant. There is still a wait, but it's not as bad because this restaurant has more tables. The XLB (steamed dumplings) is still the must order. In addition to the XLB, the green onion pancake, beef rolls, and fried seaweed fish are very good.

There are 2 Mama Lu's on Garvey. A newer trendier one with tall vaulted ceilings, new tables, etc. And then there is Mama Lu's in a hole-in-the-wall strip mall with a crappy hallway entrance, limited seating, crappy shared restrooms, and a long wait. Go to the Crappy One.
-=-Pork Crab Dumplings-=- The next time that I am here, I will definitely be getting 2 orders of these instead of trying other dumplings. These are just so good and have the tastiest interior soup.
-=-Pancake-=-So simple, yet so good. It's a bit oily, but it always is oily everywhere else. I will definitely get these next time and they are so cheap too.
-=-Pork Chive Dumplings-=- It was good, but after having the Pork Crab, NOPE!
-=-Braised Meatball Shanghai Style-=- This come out in a soup. 2 jumongous meatballs in there. Wasn't super duper. Has ginger in it, in case you have that strange allergy like me.
No qualms about the service here either. It was a full house and we got help when we needed it.
Tip: Come here right when it opens at 5pm. If you wait till 5:15pm even, you'll have a wait ahead of you.

I was told that this place was a hole in the wall with great dumplings, ugh..NO!
One, the Juicy Pork Dumpling was too sweet, not enough juice, but had decent skin.
Two, Shrimp Chive Pork Dumpling was overcooked = soggy.
Three, Pan Friend Dumpling was skinny bitches and stale, how does anything fried taste stale?! I repeat...ugh, NO!
What was actually decent, but no star was their green onion fried pan cake. It's thicker than my preference, but it's standard.
What really disappointed me was that they did not have any sesame oil per request. How can any Chinese restaurant NOT have sesame oil?! Minus, minus Star!
PS. this place closes from 3-5pm on regular days, restaurant is dark on Wednesday.
If you want to use your credit card, the minimum charge is $20.

This place may be known for their pork xiao long baos (soup dumplings) and beef rolls, but what brings me here are their green onion pancakes! They make them so crispy and chewy - a winning combo. Their handmade fish dumplings are a good alternative for pescatarians. They aren't fishy at all so my meat-loving friends love them just as much as the meat dumplings.
