This private residence-turned-hotel is dripping with old world charm from the gold phonographs to the deep jewel toned upholstered furniture. While these touches are great for some design enthusiasts, they do age the hotel in a way that others might not appreciate. The feeling of new luxury and updated amenities was not there for me as it is at other hotels. There's no pool or fitness center, both of which are important to me. However, the Mansion does have a prime location in the Former French Concession, so it's an ideal jumping off point for tourists looking to explore the city.Recommended for:Business Travelers

The eclectic charm of the Mansion hotel only adds to the enjoyment of staying in this former french concession residence turned hotel. The original owner was part of Shanghai's mafia and there are items on display from the 1920's and 30's when he resided in the house as well as pictures of hm and his cohorts. An awesome addition for a history buff like myself. Walking into the lobby is what I'd imagine it's like to walk into an explorers sitting room from the turn of the century. It's all mismatched with lots of exotic plants perched all over the place. Aside from the historical aspect of the hotel, the rooms are beautiful, a bit old and could use a few touch ups but the bathrooms are absolutely enormous wich more than make sup for it in my mind. The executive suites have a steam room as well as a bathtub and shower... So you really never have to leave your room in the cold Shanghai winter. But if you're looking to enjoy the spring and summer head up to the roof where the restaurant and the terraces are located, a wonderful place to come enjoy a cup of coffe a bit removed from the streets below. I'd highly suggest exploring the area because there is a great mix of the local culture as well as the expat community in the area.

Behind a set of iron gates, on a quiet former French Concession corner, lies the Mansion Hotel. Walking through the front door feels like you’re entering someone’s house from the 1930’s. The décor and photos are from that special period in Shanghai’s history. The mansion was originally built as a hangout for the Shanghainese mafia, and entertained them through the cultural revolution. After that the Mansion was a government building, then unfortunately neglected for half a decade due its state of disrepair. Renovated in 2005 it opened its doors in 2007 after being reinvigorated by an investor from Starwood hotels. The rooms are generous and spacious and boast enormous bathtubs (which is always a plus in my book). The suites are twice the size of normal guestrooms and have 2 full bathrooms and a fantastic balcony with table and chairs. The bathroom even boasts a mini sauna! The décor is modern spotted with classic furnishings. Everything was designed by the hotels interior designer; including the furniture and curtains! If you fall in love with any of the original pieces, as many guests have, you are welcome to purchase them since they are unique to the hotel. The Chinese restaurant on the first floor only has private rooms, which are popular among the government officials that frequent the eatery. The 5th floor has another restaurant and bar that serves western food and has 3 outdoor terraces. A great place for a meal or to soak up some afternoon sun among the FCC treetops! While its not the newest and slickest hotel in Shanghai, its rich history and excellent location make it an ideal home base for a Shanghai adventure.
