Phone: (760) 767-5311recommended Anza-Borrego Desert State ParkForgot until today how awesome the scenery is at California's biggest state park, down south near San Diego and Imperial County. Drive from Warner Springs down to Borrego Springs (a retro desert ... read moreresort town) for dizzying views. The Elephant Trees Trail near Ocotillo Wells and the nature trail at Tamarisk Grove are great short hikes. Take the dirt road around Blair Valley to see Native American pictographs and morteros (grinding rocks). Starry skies are the best reason to camp overnight, maybe at primitive (and typically deserted) Bow Willow campground in the southern part of the park, past Agua Caliente County Park's hot-springs pools.Sara Benson
For park highlights, check out my Gogobot review above. Palm Canyon campground has the most amenities and is near the town of Borrego Springs, which is handy for restaurants, cafes, bars, etc. Another great place to camp is the Tamarisk Grove campground, which was newly upgrade recently and has simple camping cabins opening Dec. 1.234Agua Caliente Park

There are several hikes leaving from this campground. You can find maps at the ranger station or the little store just outside of the camp.
