I am thinking about going here for a winter getaway. What is the difference between North and South Lake Tahoe? California and Nevada? I am looking to do just one day of snowboarding and spend 3 other days doing I don't know what yet. I would like some ideas on lodging and activities in January. Thank you!

Not sure if you already picked a place but north tahoe has more mountain resorts. If you like to gamble, go to south tahoe with its casinos.
North is closer to freeway/reno. South is more traffic prone.

I honestly don't feel like there is a huge disparity between north and south Lake Tahoe, other than south feels a little more commercial and busy. That said, the cluster of excellent ski resorts in the north offers an amazing diversity of options for all budgets, tastes and snow-sport abilities. One of my ski mountains is Alpine Meadows. I took snow-boarding lessons here and they were great - within the same day I was up, comfortable and tackling some of the mountain's more challenging slopes.

A lot of people stay in South Lake Tahoe, which makes it crowded, even in winter. But the convenience is ski shuttles in town. That said, if you want to stay somewhere more scenic, look to the west or north shores, where there are lakeside cabins to rent. You could also stay in or around the small town of Truckee, which has a half dozen ski resorts nearby, including Northstar-at-Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe, and gigantic. Absolutely gorgeous views and a massive mix of terrain, with good expert slopes.

North Lake Tahoe, and popular with boarders for its huge terrain parks and breadth of intermediate slopes.
