Marjan Beach is Muscat's best kept secret. There's a coral reef just off shore that teems with school of fish, turtles and cuttlefish - very popular with illegal spear fishers. The coast here is rocky, the water clear and the sand like sugar - none of that powdery stuff you find on most of the other beaches around Muscat. There's also a couple of places for cliff divers (only two meters high or so but still, they're there). To the right of the main beach is another little cove with it's own beach which is more popular with the bikini set. The rules are lax at Marjan Beach so cooking up some coals for a discrete barbecue or for an afternoon sheesha are no prob. Bring your snorkel gear and your paddle board or kayak if you're more interested in being active than working on your tan. Oh, and it's free unlike most of the other beaches in town popular with the expat set.
