Ma's restaurant has been around forever but somehow managed to stay off my radar for the longest time. I am surprised such a good restaurant didn't receive more attention. It had been a really long time since I had such good Chinese food in the bay area.
I was very impressed with their food and service.
If I have to pick one must try item it would be their Lamb with Pickled Cabbage Warm Pot. Think of it as a cross over between clay pot, soup and noodle. A small order will get you a HUGE pot of soup filled with vermicelli noodles, lamb meat and pickled vegetables. The sour soup is very refreshing and the lamb meat was perfectly tender. It is quite filling. A small pot could easily feed 3-4 people.
The Sesame Bread with Green Onions is another of their signature item. For those for you who are not familiar, it is a lovely round sesame coated bread. Any Chinese Islamic restaurants which can't bake a half decent one should be disregarded immediately. The sesame bread here did not disappoint. It is HUGE, fluffy and tasty. Unless you have a large group, you are most likely going to need some to go boxes if you order this. The thin pancake is a lot more manageable although it is something entirely different.
Listed on the special white board that day was their Crab Meat with Tofu. It was served with a bed of pea sprouts. The sauteed crab meat gravy was the perfect companion with rice. Tofu cubes has lovely silky texture and the topping was not salty at all. I wish they would add this to their regular menu.
Last but not least was the Stir Fried Snow Pea with Prawns from their regular menu. Not often could you find a stir fry dish at a Chinese restaurant that is not swimming in a thick layer of oil. The stir fry here does not suffer from the common greasiness problem at all. I like my veggie exactly the way they prepare it.
The dinner was thoroughly enjoyable. At some point I contemplated giving this a 5 stars review but I figure I should wait and try a few more dishes. Ma's Restaurant is going on my recommended list of Chinese restaurants.
Did I mention the service was excellent too? Our server was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Don't forget to help yourself to their soft serve ice cream after your meal.
Business was decent on a Friday night but there were no wait.
