Herod the Great built magnificent palaces on a plateau that overlooks the Dead Sea. The fortifications were overcome by a group of Jewish rebels. Later, after a long siege, the Romans recaptured the fortifications only to discover that the rebels preferred death through suicide to a life of slavery. Significant portions of the palaces and fortifications can still be seen. A gondola is available to take visitors up and back. There is also a "snake" (very winding) trail to the top.
