The Matrix was a good hotel choice for my stay in Edmonton. The hotel itself is beautiful with comfy sofas to lounge in the lobby area, free breakfast with a large variety that changes daily (including many made with organic products), free wi-fi, free parking, and a free daily happy hour with a wine and cheese tasting. The parking lot is a little tight, which can get a little troublesome if you return a little late. The rooms are clean and spacious, though the bathroom is on the smaller side. The only downside is that the walls and doors are thin, so you can hear people talking and walking around outside.

This hotel was renovated a few years ago and now has the clean, spare lines typical of contemporary design. The lobby is attractive with lots of windows which do not look onto anything of interest, just city streets.
I went for a work meeting, not as a tourist, so the hotel suited me fine. But a tourist would have to consider what they wanted to do in Edmonton before staying in this hotel. To my thinking, it is not downtown but on the edge of downtown. To get to the main shopping areas, theatre, art gallery and a number of the better restaurants, you face a fairly long walk and depending on your route, some of the streets do not feel very safe to me at night. If you are driving and are not bothered by the hassle of trying to find parking downtown or you aren't going to the central downtown core, then this hotel would be fine as the access in and out of the parking lot is good.
The room was fine, if a bit small and because it isn't right in the centre of downtown, it is quite which contributes to a better sleep. The bathroom is very small. I had no other complaints about the room or the service at the hotel.
The included breakfast is an extra which some people would find a plus. Personally, I didn't think the quality was good.
On the whole, the hotel was acceptable but I would warn anyone to give careful consideration to the location.
