I'm not a big fan of hulking oceanfront resorts. But this one is different from the rest. It's not just that it fronts what may be the island's most beautiful golden-sand, crescent-shaped beach. It's the attitude and aloha of the staff, who welcome guests like long-lost family. Renovated rooms are prettier than ever, and you won't soon forget the Big Island sunsets seen from your oceanfront lanai.Recommended for:Luxury Travelers

This is my favorite hotel on the Big Island - in fact all of Hawaii and perhaps the world. This hotel was designed by a Rockefeller heir who was also an avid conservationist and philanthropist. It feels like every room is a presidential suite. This is the epitome of Eastern and Western fusion with the benefit of modern Japanese style amenities (room card controlled lighting etc), a Kimono as well as Robes, while still highlighting Hawaiian fabrics, materials and adhering to western 5 start standards.
The hotel's beach is often cited as a top 10 in the world. The new food and beverage program is also out of this world. Do not miss the weekend brunch at Manta.
Cannot recommend more highly. If you are looking for a luxury beach vacation that is "away from it all" while still having modern amenities this is the place.
Traveling families may favor the Fairmont, Hyatt or Mauni Lani that has more "things to do" especially for the kiddos. For a more secluded getaway the Kona Village was once the haunt of all visiting celebrities while that seems to have been eclipsed by the new Four Seasons in a similar location.

This is a really nice hotel that is neither too pretentious nor is it too "retro." Beach view rooms are obviously more expensive but the golf view rooms are nice too. The beach might be one of the nicest in the state and the hotel's events, such as the oceanside luau on tuesday nights is simply superb.
Mauna Kea Beach Hotel features a white-sand, crescent beach; an ocean-view swimming pool; a full-service health spa; a fitness center; and activities such as star-gazing. A helipad on the property offers private helicopter tours of the Big Island. Snorkel gear, kayaks, boogie boards, and sailboats are available for rent. Dining options at this Kamuela resort include seven venues offering European and Asian cuisine, casual American-style fare, a buffet feast, and open-air dining. The golf course, built on black lava rock, offers a clubhouse with a Pro Shop and locker rooms.
Guestrooms at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel have tile floors, teakwood furnishings, and watercolor artwork. Louvered shutters, ceiling fans, and locking screened entries offer an alternative to air conditioning. Additional room furnishings include teak writing desks and rattan chairs. Bathrooms have a second phone, designer toiletries, bathrobes, and slippers. All rooms at this Hawaii resort have lanais with a table, chairs, and lounge chairs.
