Hardly anyone seems to know about this private arboretum, locked away inside a ritzy residential neighborhood in the hills above the Kapalua Resort. But anyone can visit, and it's free. The catch is that you have to take one of the four-times-daily shuttle van rides up from the Kapalua Resort's activities center by the golf course, and sign a liability waiver before hiking here. Short, kid-friendly trails wind around the native and exotic tree plantings. For a longer hike, head uphill along the Honolua Ridge Trail to the lush mountain lookout, or continue all the way downhill to the ocean on the much longer Mahana Ridge Trail, which empties out at DT Fleming Beach park by the Ritz-Carlton.

A magnificent trail system in Kapalua. I like to start at Flemings Beach and hike the 6.5 miles up the mountain but you can also take a shuttle leaving from the old Adventure Center directly to the top. The views are amazing and the exotic foliage offers a cool respite from the sun-drenched beaches.
