One of the most enigmatic islands in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius was uninhabited until the Dutch East India Company decided they wanted to turn the island into a food larder for their trips between Cape Town and Indonesia. So, with that came the European deer, vegetables, spices and exotic fruits. Then along came the French and the British and took the island for themselves and added to the cacophony of cultures. So now, with its cosmopolitan mix of Franco's, Indians (brought in as labourers) and Chinese (merchants), the island is a true melting pot of cultures.

But undoubtedly it’s the beaches that are the drawcard: white, pristine and lined with some of the most stunning resort properties overlooking the azure Indian Ocean. However, take a trip in to the mountainous centre of the island and you'll see waterfalls, weird coloured earth, divine lakes and even a hunting lodge that tends to those deer that were displaced by the Dutch 400 years ago.

For me though the food is the main event: go to a market and try the Gateaux Pimente (like a spicy falafel), or the salt & chilli pineapples. The streets are full of vendors on motorbikes selling Dhol Puri (a stuffed dhal pancake) and Roti stuffed with chana masala. And then of course there is the restaurant food: lobster curry, Carpaccio of Marlin, biryani and Sacre Chien fish with fried rice. All of it wonderful especially washed down with some local Green Island Rum or Phoenix Beer (or cheap South Africa wine if you prefer).

Mauritius is a wonderful place especially if you are a little adventurous and get out there and explore and sample a bit of local fare.

Lucky enough be born and raised in Mauritius. Mark Twain had it right: "you gather the idea that Mauritius was created first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius".

I'd recommend Mauritius if you're willing to take your time by the beach and rest. Clear turquoise waters, warm temperature, lots of great resorts. Not much to do other than that, but if you choose a nice hotel, the service is amazing and you can focus on your tan ;)

Luxury beach resorts do not come much classier than this. From Michelin-starred eateries to exotic spas, the hotels themselves set the trend for the rest of the island.
Whether you are looking for timeless elegance or trendy and contemporary, you will be able to find accommodation in Mauritius to suit your own personal style.
Try your hand at star-spotting as you sip your exotic cocktails by the pool.

Another super place to go. People are friendly. Hotel which I stayed in was the Sugar Beach Hotel and it is on the dryer side of the island. It has my other favourite golf course which ws designed by Bernard Langer and is Le Touessrok, fabulous.

port louis is the only part of mauritius i visited in 1999. thought that quite a few french and american tourists were around. the place had a very cosmopolitan feeling with all kinds of people moving about. i think its one of a unique places around that part of the indian ocean.

Description

The most developed and well known of the Mascarene Islands is a paradise isle, seemingly risen from the sea just for honeymooners and those in need of a tropical escape. The atoll is known for it’s gorgeous beaches, ritzy resorts, fabulous fishing, and cobalt blue waters; but Mauritius also claims a cacophony of culture, is rich in history, and has untainted natural beauty in forests like that of ... read more
