Love the retro trolleys that slowly take you from the Dallas Arts District area (first place to board is on St. Paul across from the DMA) to Uptown, making stops along the way. After the West Village area there is turntable, just like San Francisco, then the trolley retraces its path except for the part of McKinney which is one way. Each trolley's origins and history is posted inside while the driver, usually older gentlemen of a bygone era, will either help you find your destination or point out sights along the route.

Decades of New York's transit system have ruined me, and I'm not even talking about my immune system. A reliable transit system is essential since I'm A) lazy and don't like driving myself and B) need something to throw my carcass in when I'm drunk and need to get home. Which is often. This posed a problem in Dallas as Texas' transit system is reliable in the sense it will leave you melting on a corner 9 times out of 10.

As I slowly died from heat exposure one fine afternoon, I cursed the city for not being able to find at least one form of cheap easy transit no matter how slow moving.

    Then a trolley pulled up.

Never one to take serendipity or a good hallucination for granted I climbed aboard. The McKinney Avenue trolley is like stepping onto a moving museum ride. That isn't just because the trolley's are relatively unchanged and in pristine condition, it's because their drivers are also relatively unchanged and in pristine condition. You can learn a lot from an older southern gentleman who was last "spry' during the Hoover administration. Lend them your ear and they'll you a song of Dallas' ever evolving landscape that you'd be remiss not to hear. The trolley itself rides a circuit along the Uptown section of Dallas, hitting some desirable spots such as the art district and, of course, McKinney Avenue with its string of great watering holes.

The McKinney trolley is kitchy as all great things usually are. It's also free, air conditioned, and run by friendly old men who will happily regal you with history as you sit drunk and slumped on a wooden bench. The more things change...

Free trolley that services all of Uptown. Check schedules, printed maps in the house.
