The recently created Crystal Hotel is one of my favorite hotels in Portland. It's nothing fancy (most of the rooms have a small corner sink but share a bathroom), but the decor is amazing, the location is great (it's just a few blocks from Powell's books and in the same complex as the Crystal Ballroom, and the rooms are adorable. Each room has been decorated based on a song by one of the many big bands who have played at the Crystal Ballroom over the years. Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Blondie, James Brown, Jefferson Airplane, and Portland's own Kingsmen (of Louie Louie fame) all have rooms here; the Grateful Dead have a couple (the McMenamins are Deadheads). Best of all, there's an underground saltwater soaking pool that's open until 1 in the morning.

It’s likely that if you are young (or the cliché equivalent) you may find this hotel really interesting. Located in downtown Portland on 12th Avenue it reminds me of another McMenamins hotel, the White Eagle (see review) but just a little more upscale.
The motif of the rooms is named after bands or performers who have played at the Crystal Ballroom, which is just across the street from the hotel. The hotel also has a stage, Al’s Den, for live performances.
The rooms themselves are clean and adequate, but not luxurious. The rooms share a bathroom with exception of the King room which comes with a private bath!
For me, the most interesting amenity of the hotel is the subterranean salt water soaking pool.
The rates seem a little steep for what they are offering, but if you love the music scene and the modern Portland nightlife, it maybe a good deal?
Fun hotel, but for a particular market!
