This is a walking city, with wonderous art housed within every historic monument. Ceramic and tile work everywhere, dating back to ancient times, is ubiquitous and amazing. The local people are very friendly, talkative, inquisitive about western Europe and the U.S. They are fast to answer questions, always helpful and smiling. Eat the local food and see why these folks are so healthy. Drive up into the villages away from the city to see the fascinating way of life in the countryside. Sit awhile for a drink of wine in one of the outdoor cafes among the locals in any of the villages; walk to their churches and cemeteries to see how they venerate history.

As far as historic districts go, the Medieval architecture found in Rhodes' most ancient areas provides one of the best preserved looks back into a time of knights and holy wars. Popular attractions include places like the Palace of the Grand Masters and the Street of the Knights, which, based on their names alone, sets the stage for Rhodes' extensive list of medieval attractions. Perhaps the best thing here is that these attractions have been constructed by various occupying empires over the year, leaving Rhodes with a diverse collection of architecture from all over the world.

Description

The Medieval City of Rhodes is located within a wall 4 km long, and was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1988. It is divided according to the Western classical style, with the high town to the north and the lower town south-south-west. Originally separated from the town by a fortified wall, the high town (Collachium) was entirely built by the Knights Hospitallers. Today, the city is home ... read more
to a number of historic districts that provide visitors with a look back through time and across cultures. There are stunning examples of Gothic architecture found in the northern region of Medieval Rhodes, and more of the same plus a number of Ottoman period religious and recreational facilities to the south. Just running down a list of the names of some of these attractions ought to be enough to get most any medieval enthusiast's heart pumping. The Palace of the Grand Masters and the Street of the Knights being just a few of these intriguing and ultimately impressive historic attractions.
