Fez is the religious capital of Morocco and has over 270 mosques in the ancient medina, which is the largest of the ancient imperial cities. Definitely worth a trip to explore all of its rich history, culture, and sights.

You could get lost for days in the markets and hidden passageways of the old walled city in Fez. If you look like a tourist, you'll have touts following your for most of the way, but you never know -- you might need their help just to find your way back out again! We hired a guide, but in the end don't think we really needed one. If you have a good sense of direction and an adventurous spirit, you can explore on your own. Don't miss seeing the patios choc-a-block with colorful pots of dye where leather is colored.

This medina is like a labyrinth & you'll need a local to navigate the place. The Chouara tannery, the oldest tannery in the world, is a must to visit. Don't worry about the smell, you'll be given lots of mint leaves to help deal with it!

It's 1200 year old, a UNESCO World Heritage site and is said to be the largest car-free urban space in the world. Yes, you'll get lost. Yes, you'll almost get run over by a donkey carrying a fridge on its back. But yes – you will love it!

Visiting medina of Fez was one of the highlight of my trip while I was in Morocco. Its medina is relatively smaller than the one at Meknes but it is more charming (don't get tempted shopping here if you intend to go to Marrakech as it has more choices).

Description

Founded in the 9th century and home to the oldest university in the world, Fez reached its height in the 13th–14th centuries under the Marinids, when it replaced Marrakesh as the capital of the kingdom. The urban fabric and the principal monuments in the medina – madrasas, fondouks, palaces, residences, mosques and fountains - date from this period. In 1981, UNESCO transcribed Fez's Medina to the list of World Heritage Sites.
