Just down the road from the gay mecca of Oxford Street, and minutes from the bars of Kings Cross, the Medusa Hotel in its 1832 heritage terrace building has a quirky, boutique feel -- notice the antler-shaped chandelier hanging in the foyer. The decor in the rooms is a slick art-deco (think 1950's LA), and little flourishes like the leather chaise lounge at the foot of the bed are a nice touch. While the standard rooms (a bit small) are significantly tinier than the lovely grand rooms, all of the rooms on the ground floor open onto the pleasant courtyard, which is a nice spot for lounging, and especially pretty at night. All told, I hugely appreciated the unique, well-designed, gay-friendly feel of this place, and the hip and trendy Darlinghurst neighborhood makes a great alternative to the offerings down in the CBD.

Did someone say Aveda products? Aveda being the only hair and face cleansing products I use, I would almost choose to stay at Medusa just for this reason alone. A pebbles’ throw away from King Cross, the Medusa is fortunate to call the neighbouring suburb of Darlinghurst home, which is somewhat more salubrious. This bold heritage mansion contains a quirky array of art, and management are just as quirky and charming. You are the type of person to stay at this hotel if you are the type of person who knows there is more to accommodation than high-end chain hotels. I have to admit that the styling of the rooms takes a while to get used to – the modern clean lines and block colours are not what I expected compared with the styling through the lobby. If your creature comfort isn’t Aveda products and is actually a creature, you’ll be happy to know that this is a dog-friendly establishment!

Where do I start? Complete trial of style over sunbstance. The place was over-designed to the point of neglecting guests' basic needs. This put me off staying at any property advertising itelf as 'boutique' for a period of years.
