Hotel Insiders Guide
Not your typical tourist town, what Melbourne lacks in traditional tourist fare it more than makes up for with authentic, intimate, uniquely Australian experiences. Lively, sophisticated, edgy and accessible, Melbourne is the capital of Victoria and the true cultural heart of ... read more
all Australia, producing some of the most innovative art, music, cuisine, fashion, performance and design found anywhere in the country. Visitors to Melbourne discover a vibrant, modern, multicultural community amid picturesque Victorian architecture and charming green boulevards that reflect the city's historic past and maintain its distinctly European feel. Practically bursting with outdoor cafes, beautiful gardens, hidden cocktail bars, gourmet delicacies, world-class sporting events and eye-catching boutiques, Melbourne is a city to come alive in (set up with an extensive public transportation system to make it easy!). Quality hotels run aplenty no matter your taste or your budget, with reasonable rates the norm as hotels stay true to Melbourne's overall welcoming and accessible style. But book well in advance for holiday and peak periods, as hallmark events like the Melbourne Cup, the Grand Prix and the Australian Open all draw big crowds.

Luxury Hotels in Melbourne
Among the usual list of high-end players such as the Westin, Hyatt, Sofitel and Marriott, lies a collection of discreet, luxurious properties that reflect Melbourne's unique mix of historic and contemporary style. One of Melbourne's most grand and recognized Victorian-era properties is the five-star Windsor Hotel located across from Victoria's stately Parliament House, while the striking Langham, Melbourne is a favorite at this class, situated along the Yarra River just far enough from the central buzz to ensure a relaxing break but still a perfect location from which to access the CBD, Arts Precinct, Crown Casino and Southbank. Nightlife and glitz lovers may prefer the over-the-top luxury of the Crown Towers (tied to the casino and entertainment complex), while those looking for a more homey retreat will prefer the Lyall Hotel and Spa, a serene property of fireplaces, cozy living spaces and a to-die-for spa found down a quiet, leafy lane in South Yarra. Trendsters will appreciate The Olsen Art Series Hotel, a hip boutique hotel focused on high culture with a futuristic bent found on lavish Chapel Street (a favorite place for those with an eye for art, fashion and all things cutting-edge in Melbourne).

Mid-Range and Budget Hotels in Melbourne
Much like the rest of Australia, backpacker hostels with all manner of individual and dorm room accommodation options are readily available in Melbourne for the true budget traveler. For a lively overnight stay, try Base Backpackers Hostel or Urban Central. If price is more important than location but you prefer a more traditional hotel experience, the Sebel & Citigate Albert Park is a comfortable option with good sized guestrooms, scenic views and a fairly plush lobby space, plus a wide range of amenities. For a no-frills, lower-priced option in a more central location, try the the Pension Boutique Hotel, Arrow on Swanston, or the City Square Motel. Or consider familiar budget brands such as the Best Western, which has several locations throughout the city.

Neighborhoods in Melbourne
Many visitors prefer to stay in Melbourne’s historic City Center (or CBD, Central Business District) found on the north bank of the Yarra River. Here, within an orderly grid of tree-lined streets, Victorian-era office buildings and shining skyscrapers, lies the heart of the action, including the new cosmopolitan Docklands Precinct, Flinders Street Station, Federation Square and core shopping destinations such as Collins Street and Bourke Street Mall, with Swanston street running north. Nearby Southbank is a hub of art, entertainment and fine dining as well as home to the vast Crown Casino and Entertainment Complex. South toward St. Kilda one will find great beaches and a spirited bar, restaurant and nightlife scene. East Melbourne is home to Fitzroy Gardens, the Melbourne Cricket Grounds and the Rod Laver Arena. South Melbourne is where you'll find the city's old ports, Albert Park and historic Clarendon Street. To the North it's the University and a notable Italian presence on Lygon Street plus numerous pubs, trendy boutiques and ethnic cuisine in the Bohemian neighborhoods of Fitzroy and Carlton. High-end shopping and expensive, trend-setting tastes rule in Stonnington and South Yarra.

    The Hatton Hotel

    The Hatton Hotel

    Hotel Class:
    4
    1 review

Wonderful owner-run property. You know this spot is different from the moment you step in to learn that reception is also a cafe / wine bar. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed and the staff are incredibly friendly. Only downside is that it is a bit far from the CBD. The owner also has a vineyard and wine from the ...

    The City Square Motel

A room smack dab in the middle of Melbourne that is close to everything you could possibly walk to can be found at the City Square. We were able to walk to everything or take transit. The visitor's center was just down the street as were various food places and souvenir shops. The amenities were sparse but at least there ...

    The Prince of Wales Hotel

    The Prince of Wales Hotel

    4
    1 review

For those with four-star money, the Prince is a fairy high standard boutique hotel on the main artery of St Kilda’s heart, Acland Street. Classy but not ostentatious, its terrific restaurant, Circa, and lively downstairs bar keep visitors coming back for more. The real gem, however is the hotel’s beauty spa, Aurora. The place won the 2013 World Luxury Spa ...

    Adina Apartment Hotel St Kilda

If you prefer a little autonomy, Adina’s rooms have all the modern conveniences and an unbeatable location. Downstairs from the apartments is Golden Fields, a fantastic “Asian focused” restaurant with a beautiful view of the gorgeous Albert Park. Once you’ve had your mains, shimmy next door to Milk the Cow, a fromagerie that’s perfect for a post-dinner cheese plate and ...

    Holiday Inn on Flinders Melbourne

    Hotel Class:

For a budget hotel, the Holiday Inn on Flinders Lane is probably my first choice. First of all, the location is pretty unbeatable as it is just a stone's throw from Flinders Street train station in the heart of the CBD and also just a short distance from Port Melbourne. The staff was very friendly and the whole hotel was ...

    Vibe Savoy Hotel

    Vibe Savoy Hotel

    Hotel Class:
    3
    2 reviews

Here is a centrally located hotel with a lobby that is not tacky – hard to find in Melbourne. The Vibe Savoy used to be the famous Alexander Hotel, which was established in 1866, which might explain its understanding of understated, black and white class. The hotel is very close to Southern Cross station, so while it is not as ...

    Citigate Melbourne

    Citigate Melbourne

    Hotel Class:

    3 reviews

The rude greeting I got from the receptionist upon walking into the Citigate left me with a sour taste in my mouth, but he seemed to recover his manners later on so I'll try to let that go. The hotel is conveniently located across the street from Flinders St. station and in the center of all the hubbub that characterizes ...

This is a hotel in the sense that it is a pub. This Richmond icon is great for bands or a beer in the top level beer garden in summer.

    Hotel Enterprize

    Hotel Class:

The way they spell “enterprise” with a Z (though it is now called the Great Southern Hotel) should tip you off about this place – it tries too hard but does too little. In large part, it depends on whether or not a shabby lobby and generally grey, sometimes-prison-esque decor can put you off your entire stay, as the rooms ...

Unbelievably rude staff. Signs everywhere telling you what not to do, what you're not welcome to, when you have to get out, etc. No A/C, which is murder when its 100+ degrees F outside and 100% humidity. Beds are springy, bunks sway. There aren't enough bathrooms, and half the locks don't work, so you constantly get walked in on. And ...
