The Mercado Central first opened in 1872. By 1984 it had been declared one of Santiago’s national heritage monuments. It’s considered to be one of the top ten markets across the world and its building, amazingly, has conserved almost all of its original architecture. Its various picadas are highly renowned for their seafood gastronomy. Its fried fish dishes are so incredibly good because all the fish and seafood that Chile produces is first sent to the Mercado Central and then distributed everywhere else from there. You’ll also find a number of great little bars here, and you’ll be able to pick up herbs, bread, cheese, and meat too.

Mercado Central is an indoor market, with two floors and about 240 individual stalls/establishments to keep you thoroughly entertained. You’ll find butchers, herb sellers, bakeries, and cheesemongers, amongst other things, but the best reason to head to Mercado Central is to either buy or sit down and enjoy a plate of fresh fish. About 800 people work in Mercado Central, and it’s become very well known for its traditional fish and seafood specialities, including fried fish of any kind, seafood paella, and ceviche.

Chile is famous for its amazing seafood and the Mercado Central may be one of the best places to try some. Although its a little bit on the expensive side, it definetely deserves a visit if you consider yourself a foodie. The market was inaugurated in 1872 and its cast-iron roof is also an amazing sight for architecture fans.

I love public markets and this is one of the best I've been to--a gorgeous mish mash of fruit and vegetable vendors, fishmongers, and simple restaurants serving classic Chilean eats. It's located inside a pretty 19th century building too.

This is a great place to buy fish, and not a bad place to eat, although the restaurants feel a little tourist-trappy, mostly because the waitstaff so aggressively try to get you to choose their restaurant. But you can't find a better place to buy fresh, cheap fish for home cooking in Santiago.

Santiago's Central Market is the place with the highest concentration of dining options that sell typical dishes of the region. Its facilities can enjoy various dishes from the sea area or rivers, from the hands of the best cooks in the metropolitan area.

If you're looking for fresh seafood, this is the place. The Mercado Central is composed of restaurants and retail stalls selling primarily seafood products. The structure itself was built and put together in Glasgow, Scotland. Then it was broken down piece-by-piece, shipped to Santiago, and reassembled in there in 1872.

Seafood for miles and miles here and I love it! Wait! I don't eat seafood, but still loved my visit to the Mercardo. There are plenty of places to grab a bite of lunch and chat with the locals.

It's a nice market, but became really touristic, the restaurants there are so expensive. When they see you are not from Chile, the people from the restaurants try to push you and convince you to eat in their restaurant. I don't really like it, but still a really good place to eat seafood.
I found one restaurant that had a good price and the seafood was really good, so you should look around the market before choosing a place.

This is not a traditional market anymore. The middle section is nothing but a few fancy (and expensive) restaurants for tourists with promoters that won't stop bothering you. I was really disappointed.

Description

The Mercado Central has been providing Santiago with fresh fish since the 1860s, a history you can smell long before you enter the building. In the center of the market are dozens of stalls selling every fresh type of fish and shellfish Chile's long coast has to offer. Across the Mapocho River is the Mercado's sister market, the Vega Central, where you can find fruits, vegetables and meat.
