I’d say the Mexico City Hostel is like a breath of fresh air, except that you have to pass through a smoking hallway to get to the nonsmoking hostel. Still, the place is airy, clean and comfortable, with 8- to 12-person dorms, shared bathrooms, a shared kitchen, a computer room and WiFi. You’ll definitely also notice a huge and vibrant mural in the foyer. Plenty of guests were hanging out in the common areas – including a room with a TV -- when I visited. The four-floor hostel has no elevation – only stairs – so request a lower room if that’s an issue. Another thing to note: visitors aren’t allowed upstairs, where the rooms are. Across the street, the hostel has opened a swankier-looking new location with suites and private rooms with private bathrooms.

OK, so the Mexico City Hostel gains no points for originality with its unimaginative name. But this large, airy inn near Mexico City's historic heart is an attractive, affordable place to stay. The hostel has a variety of private and shared rooms in both its original location and a stylish new one, which opened right across the street in 2012. Rooms are standard hostel fare: dormitories with bunk beds or spartan private rooms with small desks. Some private rooms in the new building have their own bathroom, but guests in the older hostel will have to make do with the usual shared bathrooms, which are clean and have approximately a million showers each. Be ready to climb stairs if you stay here. The hostel has four stories and no elevator.

Just a few steps from the Zocalo, Mexico City Hostel is a prime base of operations that has a helpful staff and modern amenities. The wifi and breakfast that are included with your stay will get you prepared for exploring the metropolis while cold beers welcome your return. Dorms are nice, private rooms are simple, and the bathrooms are immaculate. The only flaw of this place is that the stone and marble create a fairly strong echo that can be heard throughout.
