MileNorth is one of my favorite Chicago hotels. Walking into the lobby makes me want to order a coffee or a beer and just hang out. The decor--dark wood, antiques, almost steampunk touches--is great, and the staff is super friendly. Danny, especially, made me feel welcome. I noticed while I was at the desk that the staff knew every guest who walked past by name. Impressive!

The rooms have an interesting, split level or loft style layout. The bathrooms have been recently rehabbed and are totally unique (the red metallic walls are surprisingly appealing). I also like the bedding, especially the branded pillows. The blinds were kind of shabby, but Danny told me they would be replaced within the month.

I wasn't able to see the fitness area or roof deck as both were being renovated, but if the guest rooms and lobby are any indication, the final product will be great!

A modern hotel located in Streeterville, MileNorth is a good pick for those who like updated décor and proximity to lots of shopping. Though MileNorth is close to lots of shops and restaurants, the street it’s on doesn’t feel too busy. The dim lobby is easy on the eyes, but also sorta funny, since it features an abstract-light design behind the front desk and old-timey rocking chairs right next to it. Very dichotomous, but I’m into it. The rooms are nice, and feature green-and-grey colors, while the bathrooms really pop with a sparkly, orange finish. Seriously, this hotel has some of the coolest bathrooms I’ve seen. There’s also a nice little café downstairs to grab a bite to eat or a cup of joe. It’s nothing fancy, but it’ll get the job done.

MileNorth is my kind of hotel. The lobby has a feel that's one part coffee shop and one part lounge. Small antique touches, like a typewriter on a side table or the checkin desk made out of old suitcases, give the place an upscale modern-yet-vintage cool vibe. The rooms are decorated in a clean palette of white and green, with pictures of the Chicago skyline hanging above the bed. The bathrooms walls are painted a metallic red that really works, and the shower curtains are printed with the names of different Chicago neighborhoods, lending another local touch. The hotel offers free WiFi, a restaurant (Ferris and Jack), and a grab and go station for for those times when you're too hungry/tired/lazy to actually leave the hotel. The hotel is currently in the process of renovating and renaming their rooftop bar, which is scheduled to open in the spring.

This hotel is a mix of modern art and homey comfort. The lobby is the kind that’s dark even in the daytime, the front desk made to look like stacks of suitcases. But then – this is sort of hard to express – there are rocking chairs in front of a fireplace that me want to sit. I can’t put it better than that. The designer did a good job when he picked the seating. The rooms are even cooler, long and spacious, with Spa-type showers and shiny wallpaper in the bathrooms and then a cushy bed area and then a living room area, and then a view of the magnificent mile (if you get a room facing the right way). The staff is incredibly gracious, and the area is terrific. It makes for a great stay.

Chicago has a lot of hotel choices with reasonable prices. We prefer boutique hotels and Chicago has a lot of them as well. We picked Affinia because of its location near the lakeshore where we wanted to go for morning runs and the price was unbeatable. About six weeks before our trip, the hotel website (www.affinia.com/Chicago-Hotel.aspx?name=Affinia-Chicago) was offering a special rate. We booked and prepaid for a junior suite averaging $186 per night.

The hotel is located just off the Magnificent Mile so was a great location for shopping. A short walk south on Michigan Avenue will take you across the Chicago River to Millennium and Grant Park where we also wanted to go. And with the proximity to the lakeshore pathway, the location for us was ideal.

The hotel has a number of extra amenities including a restaurant, roof top bar, in room spa services and a fitness center. We had a lunch and a breakfast at the restaurant and enjoyed a nice meal and pleasant service each time. The roof top bar on the 29th floor provided a good view all the way to Millennium Park and over the rooftops of nearby buildings on Michigan Avenue while sipping on a drink and soaking in a bit of sunshine. We did not try out the spa services or fitness center.

The room itself was very comfortable. Lots of room with a spacious sitting area and a flat screen tv which could be swung around to face either the bed or the sitting areas. The bathroom, like most boutique hotels, was stylish but small. A vanity area helped ease bathroom congestion. The hotel offers a pillow menu of six different types of pillows. I tried the Swedish memory pillow which offered extra neck support and supposedly eased tension. Hard to tell since I was on vacation and tension was not a concern. The hotel also offers experience kits. I took the stay fit one with a yoga mat, work out DVDs, etc. but did not use it much since we were running each morning. They also offer a walking tour kit and a picnic kit.

The room has a coffee maker and coffee free of charge. We did not sample from the mini bar nor use room service dining. We wanted ice and wine glasses had to request that each afternoon but delivery was very prompt. Housekeeping kept the room clean.

We found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful and could not fault the service at all. When we arrived, they gave us city maps and directions. They printed out our board passing at the front desk the day before we were to leave. The doormen were always very welcoming.

Stayed here while attending a conference a few blocks away. While I had booked my room weeks prior, there was still some mix up so they had to move me around. I went from a regular room to a king room. The funny thing is that the bathroom in the regular room is much bigger and nicer than the king room. But the king room is more standard at this hotel. The king rooms are really spacious. There was a separate seating/living room space so watching TV didn't have to be on the bed. I found that I spent most of my time sitting at the desk, however. The TV was mounted on an arm so it can be viewed from all the different spaces in the room. One of the nice amenities at the hotel is that you can order a variety of pillows. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try it out. I kept forgetting about it and pretty much just crashed every night. All in all, I really enjoyed my stay at the hotel. It's too bad I had to be moved around, but otherwise it was a good experience.

Great location. Very close to the magnificent mile and next to the legendary pizza spot.
