The exterior of this city landmark is a tourist photo op,’ a study in salmon-colored stucco trimmed with black, wrought iron balustrades, a la New Orleans. Circa 1853, Robert E. Lee slept here and many people can for it has one of Charleston’s largest room counts. My favorite is a poolside balcony room for its terrace looks out to the pool, which is an urban oasis. Bedding has been beautifully upgraded, yet I am not wild about the interior décor. Gratefully, the bathrooms are a good size. Walking into the Barbados Room always evokes the 1980s memory of seeing author Truman Capote dining underneath a whirring ceiling fan. The courtyard adjacent to the restaurant is still a scene, especially during our Spoleto Festival when the entertainment might be a classical guitarist. And there’s the longevity of the staff. Some like the iconic bellman, Clarence Davis, are part of the bricks and mortar.
