If there's only one historical place you visit in Crete, it's this place. Home of the mythical Minotaur, it was once a bustling palace with shrines, private residences, administrative offices, burial grounds, even the world's first flushing toilet. It's a great place to explore for kids too--lots of nooks and crannies to peek into--plus it's easy to access by public transportation or on a tour.

The Minoan civilization was a Bronze Age civilization that arose on the island of Crete and flourished from approximately the 27th century BCE to the 15th century BCE. It was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century through the work of British archaeologist Arthur Evans. Will Durant referred to it as "the first link in the European chain."
The early inhabitants of Crete settled as early as 128,000 BCE, during the Middle Paleolithic age. It was not until 5000 BCE that the first signs of advanced agriculture appeared, marking the beginning of civilization. The Minoan culture was established by the 27th century BCE.

Take your time, follow the tour and take lots of pics... The Palace is quite a rabbit warren of paths and tunnels. The history behind the palace is quite interesting. If you have an interest in history and love a great story... this is where you want to go to see it in the real.
As a fan of ancient history it was a GREAT experience.Recommended for:History Buffs
