Step into the glass-paned lobby of the Mint Hotel (a stone's throw away from Central Station, and right on the IJ River) and you'll immediately feel welcome. A smiling face will check you in, while another offers to take your bags, and light filters in through the glass walls to dance on the high ceiling as you get acquainted. Virtually every room in the building will have an unbeatable view: either the sparkling river, where you can watch ferries, barges, and ships go by -- or the spired and domed city of Amsterdam, spreading out before you in old Dutch glory. In warm weather, ask for a room with a balcony so you can take full advantage of these views with a bottle of wine or a pot of coffee - but even if it's cold, floor-to-ceiling windows give you an uninterrupted view. And the pièce de résistance: the complimentary iMac in every single room (no matter the budget), with free Internet, streaming music, and a wide range of television channels.
When you're hungry, choose one of the many options: the City Cafe on the ground floor is a perfect morning coffee start - surrounded by the city on the street side, or watching the morning activity on the river from the outside terrace. My dining venue of choice, however, was the Skylounge - with a variety of private tables, open sofas, armchairs, and bar stools, it's Starbucks meets airport VIP lounge meets corporate high-rise meeting room - with a panoramic view of the city that left my mouth hanging. Oh, do enjoy Amsterdam and sightsee your heart out - but schedule in some time to enjoy this gorgeous new hotel as well.

Modern, bright, new, and in an absolutely perfect location - both for the view (especially from the Skylounge) and for stepping out the door and walking right to your sightseeing attraction. Apple computers in the room are a memorable touch, too.
