So what do you like to do for fun when you are in sunny Southern California? I always associate the beach with So Cal. However when in SD, I always think of Mission Beach when I am thinking of the beach.
This is one of those super long beaches with a wide sand strip between the boardwalk, houses, roads, etc. They have reasonable surf for boogie boarders, body surfers, paddle boarders, and the Big Kahuna's. It is fairly clean with lots of regular life guard towers and plenty of open space to set up your spread and play with the kids.
There are a lot of activities at this beach; basketball courts, volleyball courts, a fun zone with a wooden rollercoaster, a pier, a rock jetty, a grass promontory and an awesome boardwalk extending the full length of the beach.
I have spent a number of days and nights down here enjoying the day and night life. There is always something fun happening. This place is kid and adult friendly depending on the people that you are with. Anticipate being able to have a fun filled time wherever at this beach you decide to go. Parking is often at a premium and may cost you an arm but not a leg to get a spot without fear of a ticket.
There are a number of restaurants and concessionaires near the boardwalk/beach as well. Consequently, you don't even have to bring grub with you to have a most excellent day at the beach.
Catch a wave Kahuna... Im gonna go find me a Wahine instead...Recommended for:

Enjoy the sights and sounds of the boardwalk while taking in the view of the ocean makes for a wonderful day or evening. Walking, skating, or biking on the boardwalk all offer a different perspective.
In life it is not about spending money, but rather being together.Recommended for:

99 Steps to the Ocean or the Bay, either upstairs or downstairs - two of the best vacation rental experiences we've ever had. Family owned and oriented, very personal and comfortable - just like having a close friend or relative in Mission Beach!

I used to come to Mission Beach mainly for surf lessons and day by day learned to like it more. The beach and boardwalk have something for everyone. Many options of shops and restaurant nearby.
