They renovated the hotel recently, but you can tell it used to be a really old hotel. The decor in the lobby is great, but the bathrooms are a bit old and creepy. That's about the only complaint because the location is really convenient, in the heart of downtown Vancouver. You can walk to restaurants, nightclubs, and shops!

The Moda Hotel feels like one of those condo-to-hotel conversions on Miami’s South Beach where behind the new sexy décor is still an old building with slightly sagging floors and thin walls. To this hotel’s credit, the owner has done a beautiful job restoring the century-old building: mosaic tiles and crown moldings make for an impressive lobby, and somehow manage to blend harmoniously with contemporary furnishings. There’s just not much in terms of amenities here.

Beware that the hotel is on a busy intersection, so the noise from outside can get a little annoying. Plus, it’s all about the nightlife here, with a pub, wine bar, restaurant and liquor store downstairs. If you don’t plan on staying up late, then you may not appreciate sleeping in a room next to those who do.

Although I’m not a fan of the rooms in the main building, there is a hidden gem here which I give 4-stars. It’s called Moda Series at Symphony Place. Basically, it’s four condos attached to the 3rd and 4th floors (which are also car park levels) of a high-rise across the street. It sounds sketchy, but trust me, they’re awesome and feel completely safe. There’s a special elevator to take you up, and the corridor to the rooms is secured by card access.

The location and unique character of the Moda hotel are definitely the features that would keep me coming back. It's a boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Vancouver and is walking distance to many of the major shopping areas including Robson St, and the Vancouver Art gallery. The hotel itself is small with limited amenities but is great if you're only planning a weekend trip and want to save money.

I stayed there Four nights in room 321 which is at a corner, and thus had two windows facing different streets. I did sleep well - once I found out how to close the windows. Room was big enough and functional. Internet worked pretty well once I had found the signal. The shower is probably designed for small people as the level it is installed was about my chest. I can't really comment on the price/quality ratio as I did not pay for my stay.

The entry awnings at Moda seem to go a long time between washings which in a rain-intensive month like March can leave a hotel in need of better first-impressions. Once inside though, the hotel is clean and the staff friendly, making one forget about a couple of dirty awnings (the building itself seems to be kept up well). There is even some well-maintained original tilework in the lobby.

The rooms in the Moda building are on the small side and basic but serve their purpose if you’re not planning on doing much more than sleeping there. The secret at Moda though, is that if you want something special, there are a couple of suites available just across the street.

Run from the Moda hotel, some recently constructed suites in the Dolce building are available for rent. With high ceilings, there is a room with a beautiful rain shower, and a suite with a separate kitchen and living area which looks ripe for a girls’ or boys’ night out. They’re a bit pricier but worth checking out if the rooms in the older building don’t feel like the right fit.
