The Monastery can be considered one of the most prominent monuments in Lisbon and is certainly one of the most successful achievements of the Manueline style (Portuguese late-Gothic). In 1983, it was classified by the UNESCO, with nearby Belém Tower, as a World Heritage Site. The tower was commissioned by King John II to be both part of a defense system at the mouth of the Tagus River and a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon. This Site played a significant role in the Portuguese Maritime ear of the Age of Discoveries.

Gayle and I spent quite a bit of time here, both within the Church and the outer areas. It was one amazing site and photo opportunity after the other.

Two of the most important monuments one can find in Lisbon. The monastery of Hieronymites (mosteiro do Jerónimos) was built in the 15/16th century in honor of the virgin Mary to give thanks for the successful voyage of Vasco da Gama to India. This first time a European, traveling by sea arrived in India, thus fostering the encounter between two worlds. Vasco da Gama is buried here as well as the most famous writer/poet of Portugal, Luis de Camões

Belém is worth checking out. Lots of history in walking distance. Can get a bit full but great for a spot of lunch and soaking up the history of Lisbon and Portuguese customs.

Description

The Monastery of the Hieronymites was built by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1501 on the site of an earlier church, Santa Maria de Belém, on the banks of the River Tagus at the entrance to Lisbon. It is built in the Manueline architectural style, particular to Portugal, with elements of the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods. Close to the Monastery lies a fortress known as the Belém tower, built in 1514, which has two parts, the tower itself with four vaulted rooms and the bulwark containing a casemate with artillery. The combined site was inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1983.
