If you're a John Steinbeck fan, you'll well know that Monterey, California was the setting for his tragic-comedy, Cannery Row. While the shacks, canneries and whorehouses are long gone, Monterey manages to maintain a little bit of its original character despite the best efforts of gentrification. All literary reasons aside, Monterey's natural beauty is draw enough to attract many a visitor. The aquarium there neatly captures the unique marine biology this stretch of California's Gold Coast has to offer - can't think of many other places where you can adopt a orphaned sea otter!

Didn't realize how popular of a spot this was until driving through there in the middle of July. This is tourist central, but I recommend coming in a time that is less crowded and enjoy the great atmosphere, weather, restaurants and aquarium. Great place to visit with kids too.

Monterey is a gorgeous historic seaside town. Unfortunately, it was raining the whole time I was there, but it's still a gorgeous place. Beautiful coastal region, with plenty of beautiful ocean views.

I love Monterey, it is a great place to spend some time when driving on the California Coastal Route. A must stop, the Aquarium is one of the best and the Pacific Ocean never looks better. You even get to see Otters.

Made famous by Steinbeck, this town has perserved its cannery history, and successfully turned it into a scenic place to wander around. The aquarium is a must see if you are in the area, and if you are a diver and can take the cold water, the kelp forests just offshore host about 17,000 species and make for great diving.

I love Monterey and the area mostly for it's wonderful beaches and marine life. It's a great place for a dive trip even though the water is chilly. No other destination compares to diving in a kelp forest.

This little town on the coast offers stunning views above and under the water. I go primarily to dive kelp forests and the marine preserves under the oceans but the cliffs, bluffs, and general shoreline that majestically sit over the area are always pleasant to hike, golf, or look at as well. Monterey is home to the famous Pebble Beach golf course for the golfers out there and is also home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium which is famous for it's studies of marine life in the pacific northwest, including great whites! It's definitely a small town town getaway that offers more all plenty to do!

I was first drawn to Monterey by the magical words of John Steinbeck. Once I got there I realized that his words weren't justice for what you can see with your eyes. The rest of your senses join the fun as well. I love relaxing on the rocky beaches on Monterey and enjoying the fun of Cannery Row. If you're a literary lover like myself, then relish in the sights you can find in Steinbeck's works as well.
