Coastal living with a conscience. Located along a picture-perfect stretch of California coastline, Monterey is far enough from the hectic life of larger cities like San Jose and San Francisco, but close enough to benefit from their many amenities. With the near pristine wilderness of Big Sur to the South, and the quirky individualistic Santa Cruz to the North, there's always something interesting to get involved with, or in.

Made famous by Steinbeck, this town has perserved its cannery history, and successfully turned it into a scenic place to wander around. The aquarium is a must see if you are in the area, and if you are a diver and can take the cold water, the kelp forests just offshore host about 17,000 species and make for great diving.

I love everything about Monterey except the fog and freezing cold water. Why can't upwelling bring up warm, tropical waters and create a SoCal climate here? Otherwise, this is the perfect little historic seaside town.

If you're a John Steinbeck fan, you'll well know that Monterey, California was the setting for his tragic-comedy, Cannery Row. While the shacks, canneries and whorehouses are long gone, Monterey manages to maintain a little bit of its original character despite the best efforts of gentrification. All literary reasons aside, Monterey's natural beauty is draw enough to attract many a visitor. The aquarium there neatly captures the unique marine biology this stretch of California's Gold Coast has to offer - can't think of many other places where you can adopt a orphaned sea otter!

Didn't realize how popular of a spot this was until driving through there in the middle of July. This is tourist central, but I recommend coming in a time that is less crowded and enjoy the great atmosphere, weather, restaurants and aquarium. Great place to visit with kids too.
