Monti, Rome 00184 Italy

I stayed here in April 2013 and adored it. Apparently it's the birthplace of jUlius Ceasar but if you're more interested in modern Italy, it has beautiful hidden restaurants and shops too. It's not as touristy as closer to piazza navona but it's still easily accessible to all some amazing sights in Rome, about 5 minutes walk to the collosseum ...

    Via dei Fori Imperiali

    22 reviews

Perhaps the biggest difference of all was that there was no four-lane, heavily trafficked road straight through the forum area, dividing the Roman Forum from the other Imperial Fora (Forum of Trajan, Forum of Augustus, Forum of Caesar, Forum of Nerva and Forum of Vespasian). This road was built between 1931-1933 at the behest of Benito Mussolini, leader of Italy's ...

Another Michelangelo's masterpiece is found in this particular church; and it's the statue of Moses. Not so grand but the details are incredibly impressive, that even Michelangelo himself said: "Talk Moses! TALK!"

    23 reviews

Dedicated in AD 113 as part of Trajan's forum at Rome, this 29-meter (95-foot) high marble column on a square sculpted base celebrated the emperor's military achievements. The detailed spiral reliefs on the shaft of the column, depicting Trajan's Dacian wars (AD 101- 02, 105-06), were probably added after his death as a form of commemoration. Rome’s most impressive novelties ...

The Trajan Market is free if you get the Roma Pass. There are some really cool sculptures and architechtural pieces on display. You get to see and walk through where the markets used to be. Outside, there are a lot of ruins to take in and read about. It's kind of difficult to see what the market used to look ...

In Piazza degli Zingari, this wine bar/cafe/art gallery is gorgeously run by the Calabrian Margherita, an independent woman business owner who works her tail off and has a great wine list. The crowd is a nice mix of expats and Italians. Rotating art exhibitions add to the fun.

Congregating in the heart of Monti, you'll find the hip youth of Rome. With bottles of beers, bicycles and lots of chatter, they surround the Fontana di piazza della Madonna dei Monti, a large but simple structure in the relatively plain square. Nearby boutiques and gourmet eateries provide plenty to see when sitting becomes a bore. With a good friend ...

I was guided to Casa Clementina by a local ex-pat who really liked the place. This is fortunate, as I'd probably never discover it myself. The door is unmarked, and you can distinguish it only from the number 9 and a doorman out front. Cocktails are quite pricey (over 10 euros a pop), but a closer inspection of the ingredients ...

Very cool museum about Imperial Fora and Trajan's Market. The museum uses actual Trajan's Market ruins and houses various remains from the Imperial Fora. The self guide tour is very useful. You can take pictures inside the museum as long as you don't use flash.

Fun bar. Pub. Like what you'd expect. Energetic bartenders. Rowdy crowd. You'll hear as much English here as Italian. Shots. Pints from the tap. Basically, if you're missing the ol' UK pub experience, this is the place to come. Bartenderess Luisa (or something close to that) is straight-up from England and knows how to pour a proper pint.

Check out the Roman sayings and old photographs hanging on the wall of this wine bar and restaurant—if, that is, you can make them out through the crowd. But don't let the bar's Roman pride make you think it's old-school. With its long list of small plates (ranging from eggplant parmigiana to couscous), great wine list, good prices, and friendly ...

If you're looking for a present or just a sweet treat for yourself, La Bottega del Cioccolato is the heavenly spot. With gourmet chocolates of various sorts (many of which are pre-wrapped in beautiful containers), there's a form of cocoa candy suitable for any taste. It may not be the cheapest place for chocolate, but it's certainly the prettiest.

Every weekend in the heart of the hip rione of Monti, trendsetters flock to Mercato Monti, a small but well-edited market of local designers, artisans and vintage clothing sellers. Vendors change frequently, but you can expect to find everything from sleek, handmade leather totes, to vintage sunglasses, to handcrafted notebooks. Prices tend to be fairly good, too (I had my ...

Le Talpe calls itself a "concept store," which—since the place manages to be so many things at once—is probably the best moniker. The store-cum-gallery promotes up-and-coming artists and designers, particularly Italians, selling everything from their art to jewelry to clothing. Every month, all of the items in the store are switched out and new items (and designers) brought in, often ...

On my husband and my third visit to Rome (first for our adult daughter), we decided to stay at a vacation rental instead of a hotel. At this little boutique/workshop, every item of clothing is either handmade or vintage. The handmade items are made by the artisans at Le Gallinelle themselves, who both design and sew the blouses, dresses, sweaters, trousers and jackets right there. Like something, but it's not fitting quite right? No worries—the benefit of having in-house seamstresses means they'll alter it for you ...
