The Monument of Santiago (formally Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration) is the monument erected in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros. Originally built under the dictatorship of Trujillo in his honor, named the Peace Monument of Trujillo. It was designed by architect Henry Gazón Bona. Its construction began in the centenary year of National Independence 1944, and their first piebald April 30 of that year by the Governor of Santiago Isabel Mayer and being completed in the same year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Dominican independence. In the fall of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, was given the name of Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, which retains to date. It is located on top of a hill in the eastern part of the city. The Monument is a tower of 70 meters high, partially covered with marble. Inside are murals commemorating the famous Spanish painter Vela Zanetti and a staircase with 365 steps leading to the top. Its ornamentation consists of a series of ledges coffer, in harmony with all the work completing the set with elegant Ionic columns with marble floors and baseboards, as well as the famous rock crystal lamps.
The interior of the monument is a museum about the heroes of the Restoration, which was made public after its renovation. The Santiago congregate at the foot of the tower, at the top of the hill, to see the city and have a good time in the company of friends and family.
