The Morris-Jumel Mansion is the oldest house in Manhatten, built by a British couple ten years before the start of the American Revolution. The couple fled Manhatten with the outbreak of war, and later, General George Washington made this his headquarters until the British Navy forced him to retreat from Manhatten. In 1790, now President Washington returned to the home for a lunch with his Cabinet. Vice President Adams and his wife Abagail attended, along with Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson, and War Secretary Henry Knox.
While I give the house a five for it architecture, history, and upkeep, as a museum it just doesn't measure up in terms of a coherent theme about the nature and history of the house. I was more than a bit disappointed in the house, and felt I had come a long way to see something that apparently the staff wasn't interested in showing.Recommended for:History Buffs
