I hear, and see on television, that Motel 6 is working on upgrading their properties with bold new room designs. This hasn’t happened at the airport location in Phoenix. It’s been recently rennovated but not remodeled. Ok…with that, I didn’t expect much. But what I will say is that the front desk fellow was delightful. The location is close to downtown, Tempe and, of course, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. If you’re looking to save a buck or 50, this place is clean, allows pets, kids stay free and there is a pool. Wi-Fi costs a few dollars. The bedspreads are hideous. But if you can overlook that and are looking for somewhere to rest your head, not expecting too much, then, I guess you could try it out. It’s a budget hotel. And it’s clean.

The Motel 6 Phoenix location is pretty standard as far the chain is concerned, so if you’ve been in another Motel 6 you have a pretty good idea of what this one offers. It seems like they plop these things down from the sky pre-fabricated, down to the garish bedspreads. The room I looked at, offering just the basics of a couple beds and a TV, seemed a little well-for-wear. The furniture had some scuffed edges, and the carpet had a couple of blackened gum stains. A bit more concerning: it seems whoever stayed here last didn’t know to throw their gum away, and had got it on one of the pillowcases. You’d hope they’d throw those things away once they got to that state, but they’d put it right back on the bed. In terms of location, it’s close to the airport, which is nice, except for the constant roar of jet engines. It’s also just a block or two away from a light rail stop, so you can catch a train and ride that into Tempe or Downtown Phoenix.
