The Mount Nelson Hotel was once the place to stay in Cape Town. The aging hotel has seen better days, but it still has a full-on view of Table Mountain.

Widely considered to be one of South Africa's best hotels, set in its own grounds. We were underwhelmed by our first stay, during which basic attention to detail was missed by the hotel team on so many counts. However, on our return visit they more than made up for it, firmly establishing this property as one of our favourites in the world.

I went to the Mt. Nelson for the wonderful afternoon high tea. The hotel itself makes you feel like you are walking into a tropical palace and the gardens were a colorful calm setting for the tea and goodies.

16/20; Rooms 8/10, Facilities+Dining 3/5, Service 5/5. The grande olde dame of Cape Town hotels, sitting in manicured grounds on the top end of the city centre. Plush, but decidedly classical decor throughout. Very comfortable rooms. Dignified, not exactly fun atmosphere throughout. Known for its afternoon tea. Service is world-class throughout. A safe bet if you like being pampered in characterful older properties.

The hotel itself is lovely and harks back to my image of 1950s Hollywood -- a grand facade, hillside location, rolling lawns, a nice swimming pool, and plenty of palm trees. Definitely worth a visit.

The locals rave about tea at the Mt. Nelson but we found it disappointing. The tea itself was good but the light bites were nothing to talk about. This definitely isn't the Peninsula. Go for the atmosphere and just a cup of coffee.

Beautiful colonial hotel. They have the best high tea in Cape Town.
