Mt Vesuvius is what put Pompeii and Herculaneum on the tourists map when it erupted too many years ago…Today, Mt. Vesuvius, still an active volcano that looms over heavy populated area, serves as a constant reminder that despite its beauty and majestic presence, it can also be menacing and still cause massive destructions. It is today a national park and there are hiking trails that leads to the crater.

Well worth the scenic walk up, even on a hot day. Do bring water and take care to keep kids under control. The Italians don't do 'health and safety' quite the same way. But the cauldron is gorgeous. Only mind complaint is the junk they sell at the top.Recommended for:Family Travelers

First, I thought the view from the top of the Vesuvius will be normal, nothing crazy. I was wrong, the place is really amazing. Well, you have to walk a lot, so don't forget your hiking shoes :) More the weather is nice, more the view is astonishing. It's only on the top that you can see how much the metropolitan area of Naples is huge, and from the Mount Vesuvius, you have a 180° view of the Naples Bay.
I truly recommend this place !

A view of Mount Vesuvius from across the Bay of Naples in Sorrento. Mount Vesuvius is a volcano in the Bay of Naples that is infamous for exploding in 79 a.d. burying the city of Pompeii in molten volcanic ash in the process.

Mt. Vesuvius is an active volcano. It's a small tight road to get to the start of the hiking trail but it makes it all the more fun! Once there it's a small fee to hike up the side of this volcano. Bring a packed lunch and at the top enjoy some food and watch the smoke come from inside the volcanos crater!

Adventurous tour bus ride to the entrance and then nice hike to the summit. Be warned that prices at the concession on top of the summit are quite high - well advised to bring your own water and snacks.

Walking down the deserted, well-preserved streets, I couldn't help but think about the people who lived here and how they perished in that tragic, huge eruption of Il Vesuvio all those generations ago. If you gid history and archaeology like me, this is one place you don't want to miss. Most of the actual artefacts are displayed in the museum in Naples, and I whole-heartedly recommend visiting there, too. Ah yes and the view when you take the road from Il Vesuvio to Naples and suddenly the whole Naples Bay spreads in front of you, down below, is amazing. Simply beautiful.Recommended for:History Buffs
