Though set apart from the "mainland" Amsterdam and the throbbing city center, the Movenpick has its advantages. For starters, the Silk Road restaurant and bar has an extensive variety of "East meets West" cuisine - meaning everything from Asian wok to German schnitzel, and wines from all over the world. (And 24-hour room service from the entire menu is a big plus.) The rooms are all situated to have a view - either the IJ River or the sprawling historical center of Amsterdam - and the in-room safe is, conveniently, large enough to hold your laptop. (Finally! I usually have to hide it under my bed!) The coffee bar downstairs has impeccable cappuccino, and the breakfast buffet, while expensive, has a ridiculously extravagant spread - so you really can't go wrong. Indulge yourself, then sweat it out in the gym's sauna. One particular thing I liked about the hotel altogether is that it's nonsmoking -- with my allergies and sinuses, I normally have to medicate regularly when I venture out into Amsterdam, and I HATE when I come back to a smoky, dingy-smelling hotel. This was a huge perk for me -- for chain smokers, not so much.

Attended a conference here and they did a fabulous job setting up the room, the refreshments and bringing a warm, friendly environment. The views from the conference room windows were amazing.
The only downside was they couldn't adjust the sound from their sound system so the videos our presenter was playing from his laptop could only be adjusted from his laptop. Every day the presenter kept asking, "Surely you can do something?" but either they were not knowledgeable in technology or couldn't be bothered.
The people staying at the hotel said it was a great experience and that they'd come back for sure.

Nice rooms and perfect for my business trip. You can hire a bike from below the hotel and the walk is nothing major. It is on the water and you can have a drink on the roof in the summer which was very enjoyable.
One thing that was rather strange was having breakfast and seeing a cruise ship dock right next to the hotel and tower over the building, these experiences make life a little richer I guess.Recommended for:Business Travelers

It's a really busy conference hotel, with its own floor dedicated to conference rooms and business meetings, so I'd recommend not visiting during peak season (or September, which is "conference month" in Europe.) But any other time, the Movenpick is a nice place to stay - especially if you want to get away from the city at the end of the day. It's set right alongside the IJ, which means enjoyable strolls along the riverbank or watching boats sail by from the comfort of your own room. It's a huge hotel, so you have the luxury of high views - which most accommodations in Amsterdam don't have. Get a massage or take a pilates lesson in the fitness center - or take advantage of the complimentary saunas and showers in the equipment room, a definite perk for me. The Silk bar is amazing - it has so many options (including some you won't find elsewhere in Amsterdam, so take advantage) like iced coffees, a dozen different teas, and snacks/appetizers like calamari or traditional Dutch treats like bitterballen...then of course, main dishes that include fish, meat, and pasta, as well as an American club sandwich, burgers, fries, and soft drinks. For a picky eater, and someone who is rather hesitant to explore new "kitchens", this was my comfort zone.
