You can go with a tour and have a meal at one of the many restaurants at Kintamani that offer a view of Gunung Batur, but it's a lot more fun to hike it! There are many tour groups that offer a sunrise hike. You leave your hotel about 3AM and they drive you to the base of the mountain. Then you begin the slow trek up the mountain (which is actually pretty easy if you're a hiker) and reach before sunrise- about a two hour hike. Sunrise at the top was spectacular and awesome for photo ops. A simple breakfast was included at the top. Even though the mountain is an active volcano, we didn't see any lava or much of anything else, but the views made the hike well worth it.

Rise early and venture out into the cool, eerie darkness to climb Mt. Batur. From the summit, take in the spectacular sunrise. There are many guides available who meet you at dawn, shepherd you up the mountain and provide you with hot tea at the summit. Mt. Batur is a medium level climb and takes about half a day round trip.

This is something like I've never done before. If you want to experience something on a whole new level, literally, this is for you. Basically you climd an active volcano - but don't worry, there's no lava. A car picks you up at night to take you to a parking lot near the foot of Mount Batur. While there you start trekking to the actual mountain, and this is when the fun begins. Well, fun for some. I enjoyed the anticipation and the challenge of avoiding loose rocks, slippery dirt tracks and constantly using a flash light, but my friend complained a bit. When we got to the top, however, everything was worth the effort.

The reason to why you start trekking so early is because you want to arrive at the top before sunrise. Is basically pitch black when you get up (except for flashlights) but after a while the sun starts to rise. That's when your guide brings you breakfast and a cup of tea. Trust me, it's worth every penny, lack of sleep and muscle ache.

After this you ascend to the actual crater. Since the volcano is still active so you can see the steam sipping through the cracks and watch monkeys get fed by tourists. Then you walk down the rest of the mountain. On the way back you can see people working in the fields, among the corn and tomato plants.

Basically, this is a 3-in-1 tour. Breakfast and sunrise at the top, watch monkeys and feel the steam at the crater and get a look of the lives of local farmers.

Have a nice lunch while overlooking one of the most scenic peaks in Bali. A little pricey but front row seats of the view on a cloudless day make it all worth it!
