As a setting for a trek, Lombok's Mt. Rinjani is nothing short of stunning. A 3726m volcano rising like a monster from the pancake flats of the island's north, the strenuous 3-day trek around the crater rim from Senaru to Sembalun takes in forest (and monkeys!), grassland, high mountain, and a picture-perfect crater lake with a baby volcano slowly building from its center. The final push to the summit is brutal -- an hourlong climb up a very steep slope of loose scree -- but reaching the top feels amazing, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful trek in SE Asia. As a bonus, there's a natural riverside hotsprings that feels great for a soak midway thru the second day.

Standing 3,726 meters (12,224 ft) above sea level, this second highest volcano in Indonesia is the hardest to climb of all six peaks. If you take the Sembalun route, you will have to trek for eight hours to get to the crater rim and another 3 hours to the summit. There is another alternative route from Senaru, which is longer but less steep. The view of Segara Anak Lake is stunning, in fact the whole trekking route is a big spectacle. But be warned, you must prepare your physical condition, because this is no easy climb.
