I liked this hotel before I even arrived because I like the IDEA of the history of a building being honored by its present inhabitants. Hotel Mulino does that beyond a shadow of a doubt. Sections of the floor in the lobby are glass to reveal the old mill workings underneath.
A highlight is definitely the sauna that leads directly into the pool. I took particular note of the Buddha sculpture on the way down to the Turkish Bath. It's rare to see one of those in Italy!
If you stay here, ask to stay in room #9. It's a standard but it's definitely the best of all the standards they have, with a private terrace and truly beautiful room. The shower head is one of those giant rain shower heads and doubles as a steam bath.
Bonuses include free wifi and included garage across the street. Two thumbs up!Recommended for:

There is a nice courtyard with lots of old stones around, but the sound of traffic whizzing by outside really detracts from the charm. On the other hand, once you make it through the hotel to the terrace (part of the restaurant), the sound of the river drowns out everything else, so you actually can imagine that you are far from the noise of the city. The accommodations are nice, but simple. Very clean. There are several funky chandeliers, but generally the old-fashioned art really gives the feeling of a certain time and place (very "old-villa"). Highlights definitely include the amazing spa! It's a mix of stone, old-fashioned walls with a modern sauna, turkish bath, and on call masseuse. I could definitely imagine staying there and never seeing Firenze! (Although they do have a free shuttle to transport people back and forth). The bedroom was a bit dark, and austere. I didn't want to hang out in the lobby or restaurant too long (I didn't feel exceptionally comfortable or at home in those spaces), but generally it was fine. In my opinion, this place is definitely average and there was no exceptional reason to stay there as opposed to anywhere else.

I stayed here for four nights last month, and loved it. The view of the Arno River from our room was so peaceful. The good and bad thing about the hotel is that it's a significant distance from the city center. The shuttle (free!) works really well, but you have time your visits into the city well. However, we had a car, and the free parking and location right near the highway (and the relative peace and quiet at night) made for a good tradeoff.
What I loved: the large buffet breakfast, the small spa with a great Turkish and Finnish sauna (both you'll have pretty much to yourself, if our stay was any indication), the pool outside, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the quiet rooms. We had trouble getting wifi in our rooms (a common complaint in Italy, FYI) and the shuttle wasn't always ideal, but for the amount you save with a free parking spot and being a distance from downtown, it was worth it.
