Marienplatz is basically the heart of Munich. The focal point is probably the new town hall, which has an extremely elaborate clock that draws crowds every morning for its elaborate display. Most of the main beer houses are around Marienplatz, including the Hofbrauhaus.

Definitely showing their age now, but the tower is a good place from which to get a view across the city and onto the Alps. Also convenient to the BMW museum and BMW Welt, which are a short distance away.

    Neues Rathaus

    20 reviews

The New Town Hall tower contains the famous Munich Carillon (Glockenspiel). The square below gets very busy with crowds that flock to see the display as the clock strikes at 11am, 12 noon and 5pm. Be sure to take a set of binoculars, or get there early and secure a seat in the upstairs coffee house of the store opposite.

This place is a Baroque style palace known for it's beautiful gardens, lakes, and fountains. If I recall correctly, there is a hall of mirrors that was built to mimic the one at the palace of Versailles.
