Near Termini, a visit here was the perfect choice for me on a cool rainy Roman day. Wow was I pleasantly surprised! Not only do they have TWO amazing Greek bronzes (really rare, and I was disappointed that the Boxer was at the Met in NYC during my visit) but they also have an eye-opening collection of Roman mosaics. The mosaics seem so fresh and contemporary. Don't miss the reconstructed room with painted murals of a summer garden from a Roman villa.

Founded in 1889 the museum holds most of the antiquities found in Rome since 1870 as well as existing collections of classical arts. The exhibits displayed in the Palazzo Massimo near the central Termini are originals dating from the 2nd century BC to the end of the 4th century AD. On the 2nd floor particularly are decorations from public buildings including beautiful frecoes and detailed mosaics from ancient Roman villas.

A beautiful museum. Wonderful displays, laid out in a way that makes it easy to get around, and an admirable collection - especially The Boxer of Quirinal, my favorite. Such detail in bronze is very impressive.

Description

Housed in a Neo-Renaissance palace built at the end of 19th century, the Palazzo Massimo, you find one of the most important archeological collections in the world. Like the Birth of Venus, that dates approximately 460 BC. All the sculptures, Roman coins and fragments of mosaics here at Museo Nazionale Romano are described in Italian and English.
