Your experience of the MCA will depend on what's on when you go. On a recent visit, only two galleries were open, evincing the worst of contemporary art's vices, a display of junk (spray-painted cardboard boxes? Doll heads covered in glitter?) with a lengthy explanation appended, by which the junk is meant to be magically transformed into something worthy of grouping in the same category as the Night Watch. On the upside, at least it's free.Recommended for:Art & Design Lovers

Two of the floors are free and open to the public while there are also premium traveling exhibits. I checked out the free ones and was just confused. No explanations or obvious logical themes. One was just an exhibition on "Taboos" and just had disconnected displays of things that are not publicly accepted. Felt like a fifth grade social studies project.
Do check out the new roof cafe though for a nice view of the harbor. They serve wine, sandwiches and the sorts here.

The MCA has a fantastic diversity of items on display in varying media. I'm not sure whether the museum is always free but it was the day we were there - which I'll never complain about.
I'm not generally an art fan, especially art in museums, but found much of the artwork at MCA varyingly beautiful, provacative, and interesting. And I really respected the museums open and public attitude toward its art - there are signs everywhere encouraging non-flash photography and question asking.
A great way to spend a morning or afternoon in downtown Sydney.

Recently updated the MCA is a fantastic building sitting right on the harbour between the Rocks and Circular Quay. The new rooftop cafe has amazing views and serves a great breakfast, the exhibitions are varied and updated often, take a guided tour to discover the stories behind the art and the artists creating them. Definitely recommended.
