The historic and archeological collections of the National Historical Museum (the largest in Bulgaria) are displayed in the former Boyana Residence, where the last communist leader was removed from power in 1989. But this is no collection of simple farm implements, or rough uniforms. They have artifacts from the Bronze Age through Thracian gold, Roman relics, and on. Over the ages what is now Bulgaria (borders touching Greece and Turkey) was swept with invasions and populations, and is steeped with the history of civilization (as we know it). Most famous is the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, Thracian ceremonial gold objects from the 4th-3rd centuries BC. Other displays cover the 1,300 years of the history of Bulgaria, era by era. English language labels and tours are available. The collections of Thracian artifacts are the best in the world and rival some sections of the collections of funerary gold in the British Museum.
