If you're on a budget but want to eat healthy, Portland is the right place to do it. Most of the supermarkets here have health food sections; the local supermarket chain New Seasons is more like a health food supermarket with a few "conventional" items thrown in. The deli here has a hot and cold buffet, fresh soup, and a large selection of sandwiches and pastries (including gluten-free and vegan options). The Seven Corners location also has a stir fry station, where you can pick your own ingredients and have them cooked up together in an oversized wok.The beer and wine selection is also top-notch.Recommended for:

I stopped in New Seasons and the parking lot is indeed a little dodgy. And I'm thankful that no pedestrian, bike, or vehicle was harmed as I maneuvered in and out of this obstacle course.
But that's on the outside. Inside I found a market that if full of energy, friendly people (on both sides of the cash register), and nice selections of produce, wine/beer, butcher shop varieties, bulk foods, deli goods and lots more. Reasonable prices too.
And although I only ended up with a tasty cookie and a few newspapers, I spent more time just wandering around and taking it all in. I look forward to stopping in again the next time I'm in town.
