The *real Rome* is arguably in Testaccio and Garbatella. At the Mercato di Testaccio, you'll definitely hear your fair share of the guttural Roman accent, whether spoken by Romans or Bangladeshis, plus have the opportunity to buy great fresh food of all kinds.

No experience in Rome would be complete without a visit to the market, and our pick is the New Testaccio Market, where you can sample fruits, veggies, and take in the atmosphere and Roman accents flying fast and furious.

Even relatives of Italian film legend Marcello Mastroianni have a fish shop here!

Grab some fresh tomatoes, some fresh mozzarella, and a nice cut of meat and you'll have a meal in no time!
Tip: watch out for flying elbows. Some of the older ladies (don't let her grandmotherly looks fool you) can get rather pushy when it comes to lines.
Originally in Piazza Testaccio, the (New) Testaccio Market offers the same family-owned vendors and true Roman market experience as its predecessor. Dodge elbows from persistent grannies as you sample unique offerings like coppiette di cavallo (spicy...read more from www.marketsofrome.com
