For a pastoral and nature infused country, Wellington is the urban heart of the nation. Hipster bars, amazing dining and enough art culture to push start the Lord of the Rings franchise.

Most of the population of New Zealand live in and around the city of Auckland but New Zealand is not known for its cities. I spent about a week in Auckland total on three different stops. It's a cute little city to spend a day or two in but I wouldn't concentrate a trip to NZ in the city.

This mid-sized town on the South Island of New Zealand is postcard perfect. Situated on a lake with snow-capped peaks surrounding it's the perfect jumping off point for mountain adventures like hiking, camping and skiing.

Gorgeous island. Great vineyards/restaurants with stunning views. Highly recommend it if you are visiting Auckland -- it's only a 40 minute ferry ride. But you will need a car or some way to get around the island.

New Zealand is a low populated country, and Taupo being one of the mid-sized towns, it has all the amenities, but is still very easy going and relaxed. It's a beautiful place, and having an amazing breakfast at one of the cafe's along the Taupo lake aka an extinct volcano, is awe-inspiring. I recommend seeking out one of the many ...

One of the most beautiful place to enjoy a sunset and a sunrise. I stayed there for a night on the way to Christchurch from Queenstown.

Art Deco buildings, fabulous weather most of the year round, diverse beaches, close to many decent wineries, definitely worthwhile visit.

It's hard for me to really say, I was only there for a short time and it happened to be cold and raining when I arrived so we were really limited on exploring. What I did see was beautiful and perhaps I'll make it back there some day to do a bit more hiking!

I spent a few days in Nelson. It is a cute little town with a bit of an international backpacker scene for all the travelers making their way around the South Island. I stopped here primarily to check out the World of Wearable Art Museum.
