Location, location, location. It's hard to be disappointed when the Newbury Guest House is located smack-dab on Boston's famed Newbury St. Classic pictures adorn the walls in the classic lobby where it felt like I had stepped into one of the pages of Boston's history books. Offering apartment style accommodations, the Newbury Guest House felt very homely and warm. The rooms are very clean and offer a television, refrigerator, and complimentary Wi-Fi. As great as this place is, don’t spend too much time cooped up in your room as the sights and sounds of Newbury St. are literally steps away from the entrance.Recommended for:

The Newbury Guest House was all I imagined it would be. The rooms are fresh, clean, comfortable and modern, but there's also a boutiquey-B&B sort of feel to the place that I really liked. The overall vibe was classy and sophisticated, without being off-putting or stuffy. And I couldn't believe how expansive the place was, as it looks so tiny and unassuming from the outside. I wouldn't try to squeeze a family into one of these rooms, but it's a great spot for a couple looking to spend a few days into the city and do some shopping and eating. The attached crepe restaurant is the perfect place to grab a sweet treat fuel up for a long day of shopping.Recommended for:

The easy-to-overlook Newbury Guest House is more of a bed and breakfast than a hotel, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's a good value, but amenities are lacking -- the free wi-fi and free "American" breakfasts are both positives, but NGH lacks room service, a pool, or exercise center. The rooms in the hotel are decently-sized and have a nice appearance. Some of the rooms have bay windows looking down on Newbury, those are definitely a great spot to sit and people watch from. Each room also comes with different impressionist paintings copied from works at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts, a plus for any art admirer. There isn't much of a lobby at the NGH, and the brochure rack one sees when they enter the lobby is more likely to evoke bad memories of chain motels than of a quaint hotel on Boston's swankiest street.

It’s surprisingly easy to walk past this little boutique hotel with its modest front and lone sign, and it doesn’t help that it’s nestled right amongst the shops in that same classic New England townhouse building style. But the location is a central part of the appeal, especially for newcomers looking to plunge themselves into the heart of the Back Bay. The rooms (there are 32 of them) are comfortable, and there are those nice little touches you don’t get at bigger establishments (the complimentary Wi-Fi in particular is much-appreciated). Some rooms are equipped with fireplaces, for added comfort. Bathrooms are small but fully stocked. The hallways are a bit narrow, and aside from La Voile, the on-site French restaurant, there really isn’t much in the way of facilities, but the trade-off is that you’re within walking distance of pretty much anything you could want, from fitness clubs to hardware stores to the Trident Bookstore and Café (as well as the original Newbury Comics). It’s a good choice for a shorter stay, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the city and plan on spending a lot of time exploring.
