Newport Beach has it all!! It is upscale, has great shops, amazing restaurants, yachts and the Catalina Express can get you to the island from here in 45 minutes. It is a family fun beach but if quiet is what you crave keep driving the peninsula will have an area for some solitude.

Family friendly just a 30 minute drive from the home.
Great place to rent a bike and ride the boardwalk, ride the boat ferry across to the Balboa Island for just $2.00 a car load and visit the small shops on Balboa Island or the Newport Beach peninsula.

Ghetto and smelly because of all the fishing!
Bathrooms are horrendous and there's always wet sand on the floor, YUCK!
Head down a mile to Balboa Pier instead!
But if you're trying to kill time while waiting for dinner at the Crab Cooker or OSF, go take a stroll on Newport Pier because it's just across the street!

Newport pier has been part of OC for as long as I could remember. Cool place to go fish or have a nice walk with that person you kinda like, The restaurants in the area of the pier are classic beach area eateries and a haven for late night clubbers looking for a bite. It doesn't get anymore Socal than Newport Pier. Except maybe the Huntington Beach Pier(has more events near it)
