The moment I walked in to the Anglo American I felt a sense of ease. The place is lovely -- the decor is beautiful but not fussy. The history of the building is really interesting and you can get any of the staff to tell you about it: the building was occupied by the American military in the second World War and the American embassy is right around the corner.
The signage in the hallways was a little confusing for me. I had to think every time I went back to my room in order to find it, but once I got there, I was happy. The service was really great. Ask for "Francesco" at the front desk. He has a great sense of humor and will recommend place to eat.
I sat in the lobby using the internet and when it was nice in the sunny atrium. Both lovely spaces to relax in the quiet.
This is a good hotel. Solid and historical. It does feel like it's a chain -- I don't think it is, but it somehow gives that impression, so if uniqueness is at the top of your list this might not be the place for you. While it did have some drawbacks (sometimes it felt a little dark in there to me), the service makes up for anything that's lacking.

This place has the overwhelming feeling of being in a governor's mansion, or a city hall. I'm not sure exactly how the not only wealthy but also political overtones of the place seep through the walls, but it does! Turns out, this place is around the corner from the American consulate, and that, historically, the building itself does have some government ties. It's extremely elegant and beautiful, a charming terrace that would be a really nice place to hang out in during the nice seasons. There's a piano in the very nice lobby, although it looks like it isn't used very often. Also a very nice bar where you could spend some time in. The wooden floors in the room stood out as a unique feature, although one thing that surprised me is that the televisions in the room looked pretty old-fashioned. This would be a comfortable, easy place for any American (especially wealthy) to stay in - my conservative grandparents would love it here.Recommended for:History Buffs
